What Is Loving Day?


A unique and special day called Loving Day celebrates the love that has no regard for race. On this day in 1967, the US Supreme Court ruled that laws prohibiting interracial marriage (blessed union between individuals of distinct ethnicities) were unfair and forbidden, and today is the milestone of that mandate.
Loving v. Virginia was the United States Supreme Court case that served as the impetus for this day. Interracial couple Mildred and Peter Loving, who were arrested in Virginia in 1958 for violating the state’s ban on interracial marriage, filed it.

Although today the day is celebrated with so much joy, the year however is heart wrenching. The legal lawsuit that ended the prohibition on interracial marriage in the United States is where National Loving Day got its start.
Mildred Jeter and Richard Loving exchanged vows in Washington, D.C., in 1958. Mildred Jeter and Richard Loving were subject to imprisonment for only a few weeks after they returned to their hometown in Virginia due to the Racial Integrity Act of 1924, which classified Mildred Jeter as “colored” and Perry Loving as “Caucasian”.
